Podcast Review - My First Million by The Hustle

I’ve wanted to write this review for a while now, and I don’t know why it’s taken me this long, but this series of products, trends.co subscription and My First Million podcast, both by the team from the Hustle, a daily email newsletter company, is just awesome.

Hosted by Shaan Puri, whose day job is Senior Director of Product at Twitch, he partners often with Sam Parr, Co-Founder and CEO at the Hustle, to have brainstorms and just spitballs ideas and interesting angles for businesses and entrepreneurs just looking for an in.

Their style of podcast is very candid, refreshing and haphazard (in a great way). The energy and passion with which they talk about the various businesses and revenue models of the companies they cover and feature on each of the podcast episodes gives us a really interesting view and insight into how they think about the way different business work, and how they can improve or take it and apply to a different business.

The Hustle Review

The Hustle is a daily newsletter product where users subscribe to a daily email consisting of content skewed toward business, tech and entrepreneurship.

It is irreverent, humorous, highly addictive and boasts more than 1m subscribers with a daily open rate of about 40%. That is some crazy stats, especially considering they send out their content daily.

Naturally, their business model is advertising supported for this product.

What is My First Million?

My First Million is a podcast hosted by Shaan Puri, and started by the Hustle. The podcast started with Shaan interviewing business owners on how they reached their first million. Backstories, struggles, growth strategies and basically understanding the person behind the business.

Some of their podcast guests include:

  • Michael Birch, early investor in Pinterest and Calm
  • Keith and Gelena Wasserman, a husband and wife duo who built up a real estate portfolio worth 1.3B
  • Moiz Ali, who built a natural deodorant company and later sold it to Proctor & Gamble for $100M just 2.5 years after launching

Interesting stuff.

Recently, they added a new segment called Million Dollar Brainstorm, co-hosted with Sam Parr, where in Sam and Shaan trade their research, or interesting businesses they come across over the duration of their week, and just basically chat about business opportunities within different industries, a basic yay or nay for them respectively, and how they see an angle for opportunistic folks looking to jump into business.

Trends.co Review

Trends.co is a paid subscription product by The Hustle ($299 yearly), and what it is, is that it goes in depth into the numbers and potential of various trending businesses and industries, and even some high growth niche industries that few people ever bother to think about.

As they mentioned in a recent podcast, if a founder doesn’t want too much publicity, or shares too much about their business, they’re doing a fuck ton of business. And then they dig.

Here’s a peek into the various categories that Trends digs into.

With the referral code above, you can try out Trends for only $1 for two weeks, to have a glimpse of the value you can access. And if you fully subscribe, you can get $100 off.

All in all, I think their trio of products works really well in tandem, and provide a lot of value to someone who is a business minded person who loves reading and listening about businesses out there, and potentially open to pursuing some of them.

Definitely subscribe to their daily newsletter and podcast, and if you like what you see and hear, don’t forget to use my referral link for $1 trial of their trends subscription, and $100 off their full subscription price.
